A PS5 Pro upgrade is easier to judge when you start with the games and equipment you already own. Sony confirms that it plays existing PS5 games, but the improvements available in each title vary. That makes a short compatibility check more useful than assuming every game gains the same visual features. PlayStation’s PS5 Pro guide explains that distinction.

This guide, checked on October 6, 2026, uses official product and support information. It is a buying and setup checklist, not a hands-on performance review.

1. Check the exact games you want to improve

Start with three games you expect to play soon. Look for the PS5 Pro Enhanced label and read the developer’s description of the available modes. Sony’s current page lists examples including Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Horizon Forbidden West. An enhanced label identifies support; it does not promise identical resolution, ray tracing or frame-rate options across those games. Official enhanced-game information.

Write down what you actually want: clearer detail during movement, a smoother performance mode, or more elaborate lighting. Those are different goals. A game whose upgrade emphasizes something you rarely notice is a weaker reason to replace a console you already enjoy.

Also check the edition. A PS4 release, a PS5 version and a later remaster can have similar names. Verify the store listing and patch notes for the version in your library before treating an improvement to another edition as a benefit you will receive.

2. Count your discs before comparing console prices

The standard PS5 Pro package has no disc drive. Sony sells the Disc Drive and vertical stand separately; horizontal feet are included. Put any accessories you need into the comparison before judging a console-only price. PlayStation Direct’s package contents.

Sony’s detachable-drive setup guide covers compatible CFI-2000/7000 model groups and requires an internet connection to pair the drive with the console during setup. Check model compatibility rather than assuming an internal drive from any older PS5 is a transferable accessory. Official disc-drive setup instructions.

Make a separate list of borrowed games, secondhand discs and physical movies. That list can change the practical value of a disc drive even if most of your recent purchases were digital. For a used console or retailer bundle, ask what is physically included; the word “Pro” alone does not answer that question.

3. Check the whole display connection

On a PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. The connected-device information reports resolution, HDR and variable refresh rate support. For 4K at 120 Hz, Sony’s troubleshooting checklist includes a compatible TV, the appropriate HDMI port, an included or suitable Ultra High Speed cable, and any receiver between the console and screen. A display advertised as “4K” still needs separate checks for its refresh rate and supported HDMI inputs. Read the manual for the exact model, particularly if only some ports offer its best gaming features. If you have a receiver or HDMI switch, include that device in the check.

A 120 Hz television is not a requirement for every Pro benefit: Sony describes support for both 60 Hz and 120 Hz displays. The useful question is whether your screen supports the particular mode you intend to use. PS5 Pro display overview.

4. Prepare saves before trading in your current PS5

Sony supports copying data from one PS5 to another. Its preparation steps include using the same account, updating the source console and connecting both consoles to the same network. Transfer is available during initial setup or later under Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer. Do not interrupt power or change network settings during the process. Official transfer guide.

Keep the old machine until you have opened your important games on the new one and checked the saves you care about. Confirm other household profiles too. A successful download of a game is a different checkpoint from finding the correct progress inside it.

5. Separate storage needs from graphics needs

PS5 games stored on USB extended storage must be moved to console storage or compatible M.2 storage to play. PlayStation Plus cloud storage is for supported saved data and requires a subscription. These are different tools for different jobs. Sony’s storage guide.

If lack of space is your main frustration, compare a storage solution with the full cost of changing consoles. If visual improvements are the priority, your shortlist of enhanced games should carry more weight than how large a library you could reinstall.

A useful final decision

Before buying, you should be able to name the games that motivate the upgrade, explain what their enhanced modes offer, identify your display’s capabilities and account for a drive if you need one. An existing PS5 owner who cannot yet answer those questions has a good reason to pause and check. A clear match between games, screen and budget is a stronger basis for the decision than the console name alone.
